Oil and gas industry learning and knowledge provider Atlas has welcomed a recent study from Towards Maturity that it believes supports its growth aspirations.

The study shows that 78% of organisations are now using e-learning, with over half planning to increase their use in the coming year. Atlas says that within the oil and gas sector, learning technologies will increase in importance during 2012 as companies look to address skills shortages and compliance and competency issues, whilst improving their return on investment. The company expects the anticipated rise in technology-supported learning to help it meet its ambitious growth target of doubling international sales over the next three years.

The Towards Maturity report, found that organisations reported a raft of financial and productivity benefits from learning technologies which included: 41% reduction in their training costs, 35% reduction in time to proven competency, 23% increase in overall staff satisfaction, 20% improvement in customer satisfaction and 18% increase in qualifications gained by staff.

Atlas CEO John Rowley, said: “Some companies have resisted embracing technology when it comes to learning and training, but it is evident that there is a shift-change happening in terms of understanding that it has a real place in not only supporting learning but also in bringing wider benefits to an organisation.

“Oil and gas in particular is an industry that relies on facts and empirical data. With thousands of vacancies across the industry and a large number of companies struggling to recruit the skilled personnel needed to fulfil projects planned for 2012, it would appear that many are taking a closer look at e-learning as a potential solution.”
