Epic is sponsoring ‘Team RAF Survitec Epic’ as they Race across America (RAAM) in June to raise awareness of and funds for Help for Heroes.

Established in 1982, RAAM is one of cycling’s longest running and toughest annual endurance events. Covering a distance of 3,010 miles from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland, in less than 9 days, the race is 800 miles longer than the Tour de France in less than half the time.

Ed Nockles, Epic’s web producer, is joining the 9-man support crew to help organise, motivate and discipline the 4-man riding team of Squadron Leader John Crewe, Flight Lieutenant Peter McCrory, Mr Steve Duffy and Flight Sergeant Matt Stephenson. The race requires continuous cycling day and night, meaning that the riders have to complete 125 miles each at over 20mph per day/night.

Nockles, who is also raising money for Street Child Africa, said: “I’m really looking forward to the physical and mental challenges ahead. Supporting four RAF cyclists competing in one of the world's toughest races will give me a great sense of achievement. Not only will I ensure the safety and competitive edge of the riders, I’ll also see America from an entirely different perspective.”

Jonathan Satchell, Epic’s chief executive, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Epic to be involved in and we really look forward to tracking the team’s progress via Ed. We wish him and the team every success in the race and, of course, in raising much needed cash for charity.”
