An e-learning course from the Healthcare e-Academy has received Royal College of Nursing (RCN) accreditation.
The ‘Management of Urinary Catheterisation for Adults’ module is delivered entirely online, and aims to improve catheter care and reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). Although it is a common procedure, urinary catheterisation carries many risks and is said to be one of the chief causes of healthcare-associated infections in the NHS.
Developed by the Healthcare e-Academy in partnership with personnel from Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust, the module is targeted primarily at workers in the NHS. However the information is said to be applicable for anyone working in the healthcare sector with responsibility for catheterisation, including hospital support personnel and care homes staff.
Judith Clarkson, Virtual College’s divisional director of e-academies, said: “The module is making an increasing impact in equipping healthcare workers across the country with a better understanding and ability to respond to what is a growing problem nationwide. Having RCN learning and development accreditation illustrates that that the course is a valuable resource that actively promotes best practice and contributes to public and patient safety by supporting nursing and health care delivery.”
